Point guards are the quarterbacks of the basketball floor. And just as they are important to your favorite NBA basketball franchise, they are just important in fantasy basketball. If you have the wrong point guard playing in your starting lineup, that can cost you a great deal of games and it might hurt your ability to compete in certain categories throughout the season.
Obviously, the bulk of your assists are going to come from the point guard position, so if you go with a scoring point guard or point guards, you may be forfeiting the assists category week in and week out. So while someone like Gilbert Arenas is a great pick as an overall fantasy basketball player and as a point guard, it is important to try to back him up with another point guard who focuses more on distributing the rock.
Now, that you have the knowledge, here are you rankings for centers in November’s first edition of the Fantasy Basketball Rankings for point guards.
1. Steve Nash – The quintessential point guard. His pass first, shoot later mentality is one of the most dangerous 1-2 punches in all of basketball. His ability to create shots for others is uncanny. He turns average Joes into all-stars, and he does it with so little apparent effort. Last year, Nash averaged 18.5 points, 11.6 points and had an assists to turnover ratio of 3.08. The amazing thing is that he needs very few shots to get his 18.5 points. He shoots 53% from the field, hits 45% of his 3-pointers and makes 89.9% of his free throws. He also makes over two 3-pointers a game, something that only one other point guard did last year.
2. Jason Kidd – Jason Kidd is yet another prototype point guard, except he is more of a complete player all around. J-Kidd averaged 13 points and 9 assists per game. That is less than Nash, and it is mainly because of the pace for which each of the teams plays at, but in fantasy basketball, Nash’s pace is more beneficial, making him the top pick. However, Nash does bring down 8 boards per game, and his A/T ratio is higher than Nash’s at 3.455. He also gets more than twice as many steals four times as many blocks.
3. Gilbert Arenas – It was a sad, sad, day when Gilbert Arenas went down for the season last year, with only 8 games remaining in the Wizards’ schedule. Gilbert averaged 30 points per game and just less than 6 assists per game. He made 205 3-pointers, and shot 42% from the field and 84% from the line. His electrifying nature means that he could give your fantasy team a big boost on any given night, and that ability is something that very few other point guards in fantasy basketball can provide.
4. Chris Paul
5. Baron Davis
6. Chauncey Billups
7. Deron Williams
8. Mo Williams
9. Tony Parker
10. Stephon Marbury
