Song of Redemption for the New York Giants

The New York Giants’ run at the Superbowl should not come as a surprise. In this season of redemption, the Giants chance at a Superbowl Title is just redemption for not winning it all last year.

The Giants have been an up and down team throughout the Coughlin era. They often have had great starts to the season that ultimately ended in weak finishes that either resulted in the Giants just making the playoffs or, in the case of one season, just missing the playoffs.

This season is really no different, only this time the roller coaster ride has been reversed, with the bad coming before the good.

Early on, the Giants started off 0-2, giving up 90 points in their first games. The first loss came at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys, who not only beat the Cowboys, but also almost knocked Eli Manning out for a few games. The Dallas Cowboys then came back to beat the Giants again, and this time it wasn’t even close. Yet, as many of you are aware, the third time was the charm for the Giants, as they were able to get the better of Dallas in their playoff match-up that sent the Cowboys packing for the off-season earlier than expected.

The Packers gave the Giants their 2nd loss of the season, with a might spanking in the Meadowlands that made many people wonder if the Giants would be any good this season. Favre threw all over the Giants mix of aging veterans and unseasoned rookies, and even the Packers running game (which was pretty nonexistent at this point in the season) was able to run all over the vaunted Giants’ defensive line. But the Giants would avenge this loss as well, with a stunning overtime victory in Green Bay, during what was the 3rd coldest playoff kickoff in NFL history.

In their third game of the season, the Giants were on the verge of going 0-3, when they entered the halftime trailing the Redskins by 2 scores. They were pretty much smacked around, especially the defense that was supposed to be the most consistent unit on the team. However, a redeeming 2nd half comeback was sparked by a defense that shut the Redskins out for the rest of the game, allowing a resurgent offense to capture the victory in what was probably the most important half of football for the Giants in 2007 NFL Regular Season.

The Giants had a pretty bumpy ride to their 10-6 finish. But no game was as up and down as their loss to the New England Patriots. The Giants were up early, but then the Patriots, as they do quickly responded. But the Giants were up for the challenge and mounted a 12-point lead in the 3rd quarter. However, Tom Brady and Randy Moss proved to be too much in the end, and won the game 38-35.

Now here the Giants are in the Superbowl, having redeemed some of their most emotional and crucial losses of the season. Ironically, their opponent is the one contending team that the Giants have yet to exercise redemption against. I’m not one to call upon fate in professional sports, but if there was ever a venue setting up for the inevitable, it’s not impossible that the Giants could be singing a song of redemption when all is said and done in Glendale, Arizona.
