Three Yards & A Cloud of Dust: Friday, June 20, 2008

Here's what's been happening on and off the gridiron this week.

The Chicago Bears signed Defensive Lineman Tommie Harris to an extension. Clearly, this was something they had to do. Tommie Harris has been selected to the past three NFL Pro-Bowls and he had a career high eight sacks from the defensive tackle position last season. Not to mention, he is the Warren Sapp of Tubbie’s latest version of the Tampa 2 defense, and without locking him up through 2012 with $40 million ($27 million guarantees), that defense might have lost this valuable player in the seasons to come.

There are numerous reports out there suggesting that the Green Bay Packers are after disgruntled Defensive Lineman Jason Taylor. Only 2 years removed from a Defensive MVP award in 2006, Taylor is quietly (but not so quietly) requesting to be traded away from the Miami Dolphins. The only problem is that the Packers don’t see Taylor as high enough of a commodity as the Dolphins want to sell him off for. The Dolphins probably won’t take less than a second round pick, and the Packers certainly aren’t willing to part with that a year away from the next NFL Draft.

So Adam “Pacman” Jones wants to get rid of his middle moniker. The thing is, people don’t choose their nicknames, they are given. And the fact that the new Dallas Cowboy was once given that name means that someone, if not many, found something about him that attached him to the nickname of Pacman. Thus, society has gone on to call him by that name and that’s how people know him. And given that the name Adam Jones could be describing hundreds of thousands of men across this country, many people wouldn’t know who someone was talking about if they just used his birth name.

Thankfully, it appears as if the Oakland Raiders latest wide receiving acquisition Javon Walker will be ready for the start of training camp after suffering a brutal robbery and attack just this past Monday on June 16th. Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said “The info that I have is he’s going to be fine… Training camp won’t be an issue.” So it appears as if Walker will show up on the July 25th starting date ready to play. Sophomore quarterback JaMarcus Russell has to be quite happy to hear that, since he will need every bit of help he can get in his first year at the helm.

For quite a while now, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terry Glenn has been speaking out against the Cowboys who allegedly proposed a $500,000 injury settlement to the injury-riddled receiver in case he can’t suit up and play this season. Owner Jerry Jones even went as far as to say that “I paid him $5 million last year and we got four plays [from Glenn].” But apparently, Glenn, who was fired up about all of this just a while ago and even asked to be released from the team earlier this week, is now singing a different tune. He seems to think that he can work things out. Chances our, his people told him that it would be in his best interest to try to come to a meeting point between the $500K Jones offered and the $1.74 million he would be owed for this season. Because in all likelihood, there’s not much of a market for a receiver with no legs who might not even play NFL football this fall.
