New York Giants Trade Jeremy Shockey to Saints

Yet another surprising, yet not so surprising, trade has gone down in the NFL today.

Less than 24 hours after the Miami Dolphins finally sent Jason Taylor packing to the Washington Redskins, the New York Giants sent often talked about Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints have been in the hunt for Shockey’s services since the beginning of the off-season. Many people thought that Shockey was going to be a Saint before the start of the 2008 NFL Draft, but the Giants stuck to their guns and didn’t trade him a way for a cent less than they thought he was worth.

Well, just like Bill Parcells realized down in Miami, it’s not the trader who sets the price, it’s the market. A simple rule of supply and demand. And it appears as if the market said that Shockey was not worth more than a 2nd and a 5th round draft pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

So now Shockey will be a part of what has been one of the more prolific offenses of the past 2 seasons. His demands to throw him the ball should be satisfied, as this is not only an offense that loves to get the ball over the middle of the field, but they also love to throw to the tight end. Last year, Erick Johnson caught 34 passes in the first half of the season before injuries, and his lack of production after catching ball, caused his numbers to drop in the 2nd half. If Shockey hit that pace he would catch about 70 balls in 2008. He only caught 57 passes last season.
