The NFL has reinstated Pacman Jones of the Dallas Cowboys back into the league. This means that the long-time suspended cornerback will be in a Dallas Cowboys uniform in Week 1 of the NFL season.
This came as no surprise for most sports watchers, which is why this isn’t exactly breaking news. Once the NFL allowed him to play in pre-season games, it was all but 100% correct to believe that Pacman would be back in an NFL uniform at the start of the 2008 season. What is a surprise though, is the type of impact that Pacman is going to have on this team now that he is officially back in the NFL.
The Cowboys got Pacman Jones for a 4th round pick. Need I even mention that he was drafted in the first round just 4 years ago and that he did nothing on the field to deter people from believing he was worth the 1st round status? Need I even say that before he was suspended, he was one of the league’s most feared returners and that he picked balls out of the air like a tiger pounces on its prey? Pacman is a playmaker, and to get him for a 4th round pick and a below average cornerback salary is highway robbery…and the Dallas Cowboys are getting away with it.
Now before I go too far, let me say that Pacman has a long way to go to get back to the form he demonstrated in 2006. He has looked rusty in camp, and that rust hasn’t exactly faded as quickly as some might have hoped. I expect that he will be picked on early on in the year, especially with Terrance Newman lining up on the other side of him.
But sooner or later, Pacman Jones will get his mojo back, and he will be the same football player he was in 2006 that was returning kicks and interceptions into the end zone, just like he did to my very own Philadelphia Eagles in that same season.
