Pacman Jones is Suspended from the NFL...Again

Pacman Jones has done it again. He has gotten himself suspended by the NFL for being in violation of the strict regulations he was subjected to as a result of his prior suspension. Now he will miss at least the next 4 games for the Dallas Cowboys, making owner Jerry Jones’ bet on the savvy cornerback/returnman an official blow up.

I would make a really big deal of the Pacman Jones suspension. Afterall, if a top cornerback on a contending an NFL team were to go out for 4 weeks, it would certainly be big time news. However, Pacman is not a top cornerback, and the Cowboys have far more concerning player losses than this one.

The absences of RB Felix Jones, QB Tony Romo and CB Terrance Newman are far more egregious than losing Pacman Jones. Jones entered the season as the team’s 3rd cornerback. Those other 3 guys I named are all potential starters. Granted Pacman is a potential starter as well, but he is one that has vastly underperformed despite starting most of the season thus far.

And even if Pacman Jones presence on the field were to be solely missed by the Cowboys, losing him to suspension is not a surprise. Every writer in the world was waiting for the day when the signing of Pacman Jones would blow up in Jerry Jones face. Don’t get me wrong, I would probably take the same risk, because as I see it, there is far little to lose if you’re in Jerry Jones’ situation. But needless to say, with Pacman being suspended for 4 games because of foolish antics, anybody who has ever had reason to dislike Mr. Jones is happy that he lost this gamble. Truth be told though, he didn’t lose a whole lot.

Whether he signed Pacman Jones or not, he would be in a situation where the same cornerbacks that are going to start for the Cowboys this would start. He didn’t give up any players are release anybody of significance to keep Pacman Jones on the roster. He gave up a future 2nd day pick and pays Pacman Jones a salary that he bet on a hole of golf if he wanted to.

The only person who loses in this is Pacman Jones, which is really a sad thing. I don’t know Pacman Jones, but if I had to guess, I’d say he isn’t a very bright guy. At no point in his life has he proven that he is the same type of monetary value in a real-world occupation as he does playing football and yet for some reason he continues to throw his meal ticket away as if he can just pull another one out of his pocket. And I’m not saying that I even agree with this suspension—because I’m not sure that I do—but I do know that when you’re under the microscope and millions of dollars are on the line, you ought to stay the hell out of trouble.

I know it would suck to have to stay at home, not act out all of your aggressive reactions and not say everything you want to say, but if it allows you to provide for yourself and your family in a way that 95% of the people in this country can’t imagine, then you just have to make a decision. Pacman Jones seems to have made his. I just hopes he understands the repercussions.
