Absurd to include Laettner instead of Shaq on Dream Team?

This is just a quick thought I had in reading an article, and perhaps I'll do more of this if the response is good, but I had to throw this "historical" question out there.

In a J.A. Adande piece on ESPN.com, Adande opines on the recent developments concerning Isiah Thomas and Magic Johnson and their media war about their failed friendship. While that subject is interesting in some respects, it's a little to "personal" for this site.

However, in the article, Adande brings up how it was absurd to leave Isiah Thomas off the Dream Team just because Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan didn't want him on the squad. That is a sentiment I can co-sign on.

But then, in passing, Adande says it was absurd to leave Shaquille O'Neal off the team and fill the lone college basketball player slot with Christian Laettner. That I can't agree with. While Shaq was definitely the better player and has clearly had the better NBA career, there's no doubt in my mind that Laettner was the better college basketball player--or at least had the better college basketball career. Thus, in my opinion, Laettner was the obvious choice for a college player, if indeed a college player had to be on the team.

But what do you think? Should Shaq have been on the team over Laettner? I would be real interested in hearing what those slightly older than myself have to say on this question.
